The Port Arthur Massacre, a devastating event in Australia's history, occurred on April 28, 1996, at the historic Port Arthur prison colony, a popular tourist site in Tasmania. The massacre, carried out by Martin Bryant, resulted in the deaths of 35 people and the wounding of 23 others, making it one of the deadliest shooting sprees in modern history at the time.

Bryant, who was 28 years old at the time of the attack, began his shooting spree at a café in the Port Arthur Historic Site. He then moved to other locations within the site, indiscriminately firing at people. The massacre concluded with a standoff at a guest house, which ended the following morning when Bryant was captured by police.

In the aftermath of the massacre, there was an outpouring of shock and grief both within Australia and internationally. The event also had significant political and legal repercussions. It served as a catalyst for major changes in Australia's gun laws. Just 12 days after the massacre, Australian Prime Minister John Howard led the introduction of strict gun control legislation, known as the National Firearms Agreement.

This legislation included a near-ban on automatic and semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, a mandatory buyback program for firearms that were made illegal by the new laws, and stringent requirements for licensing and safe storage of guns. The buyback program resulted in the surrender of over 600,000 firearms.

Bryant was subsequently tried and found guilty of 35 counts of murder. He received 35 life sentences without the possibility of parole. His motives for the massacre remain unclear, as he provided no concrete explanation for his actions.

thanks man. Part 1 has all the gore. A copy of this video was found in a Tasmanian rubbish tip in 1994 but i think it's only just been put online recently.

a: Bryant had plenty of experience with their use as he lived on a farm and had several high powered rifles and enjoyed using them (before the massacre)

b: Bryant was a Local to the area (very small community) and was identified immediately by witnesses, followed and eventually cornered by Police.

As for the kill/wound ratio, he was point blank, covering the only exit to a small crowded room full of people with a semi-auto high powered rifle - well gee whiz, a blind man could do pretty well in that situation, and I don't think it needed to be commented upon.

Interesting story here, was just reading about conspiracy about this and government. gun control and that a lot of witnesses told they heard multiple gunshots from multiple angles.

The mother of Martin Bryant says she believes there is no evidence linking him to the killing spree at Port Arthur and that he may be innocent.

In her first TV interview since the massacre 15 years ago, Carleen Bryant tells 60 Minutes that she regrets convincing her son to plead guilty to the shooting.

Martin Bryant has been held in the hospital ward at Hobart's Risdon Prison since he was jailed in November 1996 for murdering 35 people and injuring many others.

But Carleen says she believes that if he had pleaded not guilty, he may have escaped conviction.

"Of course, I'll regret it for the rest of my life," she tells 60 Minutes.

"Martin always, when he was questioned, probably for weeks after, before I saw him again, he always said he was never in Port Arthur at Broad Arrow.

"A lot of people on that day came forward after, people who knew Martin, had know Martin for years and they said as far as they were concerned they didn’t recognise the gunman as being Martin Bryant.

"There's a lot of people that realise that Martin didn’t have a trial and that there was no evidence proven whether he was the gunman."

Despite her claims, which are bound to upset many affected by the tragedy, Carleen admits her son was a very troubled young man.

She says psychiatrists told her that he would never be able to hold down a normal job.

"We'd often find his toys broken at a very young age," she said.

"He would aggravate people to such an extent that he'd always be in trouble.

Marty was a simple guy. The psychiatrist say he has the mental age of an 11 year old. Not surprising really. Well anyway, Marty owned some guns. And one day he went for a little drive down to Port Arthur, on the gorgeous little island state of Tasmania, Australia (not too far from where I live). So, anyway, Marty decided to go hunting, I don't think anyone really knows why, I doubt whether Martin has a clue either. While at Port Arthur Marty shot some people, over 60 in fact, and of these people shot 35 died.





Interesting Bits

Martins nickname is "Stupid Marty", not hard to figure out why.

Martin was rich. He had been shacked up with an old woman who left him a shitload of money, perhaps he wasn't that stupid after all.

Port Arthur is an old convict site and when Martin started killing people most of the crowd actually thought that it was all a re-enactment of old convict days.

It took Bryant only 90 seconds in the Broad Arrow Cafe to kill 20. He really must have been psyched.

He then took the road to the Sea Scape Inn, and along the way 12 more ended up dead. Then he eventually stopped at the Sea Scape, killing the owners and a guest.

All up 35 Dead, and Marty comes running, naked, out of the burning Sea Scape, badly burned but alive.

He never had a gun licence.

His favorite films were Babe and The Sound of Music.

He once flew to Disneyland but came home after three days because it started raining.

In late 1995 Marty lost his luggage while returning to Australia and, when found, customs found 4 pornographic videos containing Beastiality in them.

Martin walked out of the cinema during Casino because he didn't like the violence in it.
