Juan Luis Lagunas Rosales, the 17-year-old Mexican social media personality known as "El Pirata de Culiacan," was shot dead inside the Menta2 Cantaros bar in Zapopan, Jalisco, early on December 18, 2017. About four armed men arrived in a pickup truck, entered the bar and opened fire. Lagunas Rosales was struck at least 15 times in the head, arms and chest and died at the scene. The bar owner was also wounded and later died at a private hospital.

Hours before the attack, Lagunas Rosales had broadcast live from an apartment in Guadalajara and invited followers to the bar, where he was scheduled to appear. He had gained several hundred thousand followers through videos of himself drinking, partying and listening to regional Mexican music. The killing was widely linked to a video in which he insulted Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The Jalisco state prosecutor's office did not confirm that motive and said investigators were pursuing several lines of inquiry. No arrest or charge in the killing has been publicly confirmed.
