Police Woolwich "beheading" being treated as terror attack.

The Woolwich Terrorist attack occurred in the vicinity of the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich. The victim, Lee Rigby, was a serving soldier in the British Army. He was off-duty at the time of the attack.

Two individuals, Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale, carried out the attack. Rigby was run over by a vehicle driven by the assailants and then subjected to a brutal assault. The attackers used knives and a meat cleaver, inflicting fatal wounds on Rigby. The attack was not only brutal but also highly public, occurring in broad daylight on a busy street. The attackers did not immediately flee the scene but instead stayed to engage with bystanders, making political statements.

The police arrived at the scene shortly after the attack. The assailants, who were armed, were shot and wounded by the police before being apprehended.

Following their arrest, Adebolajo and Adebowale were treated for their injuries and later stood trial for the murder of Lee Rigby. Both were found guilty and received life sentences.

Investigations into the attack revealed that it was motivated by Islamic extremism. The attackers claimed that their actions were in retaliation for British military involvement in Muslim countries.

Several witnesses described seeing a "beheading" while another described seeing a man wearing a Help for Heroes T-shirt being attacked with a machete-style knife and dumped in a south-east London street.

Woolwich and Greenwich MP Nick Raynsford said it was his understanding that one person, a serving soldier, was dead and his two alleged killers were taken to hospital.

London Ambulance Service confirmed a man was found dead at the scene, while two other men were taken to hospital, one of them in a serious condition. London Air Ambulance confirmed that one patient was airlifted from the scene, while another was taken away by road ambulance.

One witness, identified as James, said he and his partner saw two black men attack a young man aged around 20 in a Help for Heroes T-shirt with kitchen knives like he was "a piece of meat". "They were hacking at this poor guy, literally," he told LBC radio. "They were hacking at him, chopping him, cutting him." Fighting back tears, he added: "These two guys were crazed. They were just animals. They dragged him from the pavement and dumped his body in the middle of the road and left his body there."

He said after the "horrendous" attack, the two men, in their 20s, just stood around, waving knives and a gun, even asking people nearby to take pictures of them "as if they wanted to be on TV or something". "They were oblivious to anything, they were more worried about having their photo taken, running up and down the road," he said. "They had no intention of running off or leaving or anything. In my opinion, they were waiting for the police to arrive to be shot by the police. That's the only thing I can think. It's horrendous what they were doing to that guy." Some "brave" women tried to shield the man on the ground from them, he added.

He also said it was 20 minutes before armed police arrived at the scene. "When the armed police came flying around the corner, the man with the beanie hat, the tall guy, he charged at the police vehicle," he said. "A shot was fired by the other guy with the gun. Six shots were fired, both men went down and we now know they are dead as well."

Two attackers filmed their deadly assault on a man in Woolwich, according to Sky sources.

Senior Whitehall sources said the attackers had also asked passers-by to film them, and had shouted "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is great).

A meeting of Cobra - the government-level national emergency response committee - has been convened, the source added.

Home Secretary Theresa May has described the events in Woolwich, south east London, as "sickening."

Sky Home Affairs Correspondent Mark White said: “There has been a concern for some considerable time about the potential for home-grown terrorist groups.

“These kind of attacks do not need to be sophisticated and in many respects the less sophisticated they are, the more easily an attack can be perpetrated.”

“These home-grown terrorist cells of very low sophistication can choose insecure targets that do not have any level of security around them by going into crowded places or taking on individuals.

“The concern the police and the security services have is just how to keep an eye on these radicalised individuals who are willing to carry out low-level, unsophisticated attacks like this would seem to have been.”

Sky News has learned Prime Minister David Cameron has cut short a trip to Paris to return to London to oversee the response to the attack.

Exclusive: Man with bloodied hands at Woolwich scene
ITV News has obtained footage of a man with bloodied hands and carrying knives speaking into a camera in Woolwich.

He made a series of political statements.

"We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you," he said.
