Augusto Pinochet, the former dictator of Chile, died on December 10, 2006, in Santiago, Chile. Pinochet was 91 years old at the time of his death. Pinochet came to power in Chile through a military coup on September 11, 1973, which ousted the democratically elected socialist President Salvador Allende. Pinochet then established a military dictatorship that lasted until 1990. His regime was characterized by widespread human rights abuses, including torture, forced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings of political opponents.  ·  · |
