ive heard of the emmit story, they have the original coffin from the funeral at the smithsonian. ( the body was moved to another coffin)

I read that his mother was TOLD by people that she "better" keep the coffin shut (or else) but she insisted that the world needed to see what these racist bastards had done to her son and had an open casket funeral. Like most bullies, do your harm then try to intimidate the victim into NOT showing what you did. Glad she was defiant and had the open coffin funeral. Too many people did crap like this and got away with it due to people being scared. The lynching depicted in "To Kill A Mockingbird" and "Places In The Heart" are all too true and very close to actual fact of those times.

Young Emmett was visiting family in a small town in Mississippi, and as he was leaving a store he spoke to the woman behind the counter, the wife of the owner. She was a white woman, he was a black teenager in the South.

Not long after that, the store owner and his half-brother took Emmett from his great-uncle’s house, took him to a barn, shot him, beat him, gouged out one of his eyes, and threw his body in a river.

The murderers were acquitted by a jury of white men, and protected by double jeopardy, admitted to the crime in a magazine a year later.

His mother, Mamie, ignored those who told her to not open Emmett’s closed casket. She insisted on an open-casket funeral, so the world could see what had been done to her son.

Sadly, not enough young people have heard of Emmett, or his brave mother. It’s a heartbreaking story of racism in the South.

When he was thrown into the river, the sick fucks tied a cotton gin to his chest so he would sink but it came untied.
