Alexander Yuryevich Pichushkin, infamously known as the Chessboard Killer, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2007 for a series of brutal murders spanning from 1992 to 2006. Pichushkin, believed to have killed at least 49 people and possibly up to 60, carried out most of his killings in Moscow's Bitsa Park.

Pichushkin's killings began in 1992, with a notable increase in activity after Russia's 1996 moratorium on the death penalty. His victims, predominantly elderly homeless individuals, were lured with the offer of vodka in Bitsa Park and then brutally killed. The method typically involved a fatal strike to the skull with a hammer or bottle, and in some cases, victims were drowned in the sewage canal. Pichushkin was known for leaving a disturbing signature on his crimes by impaling the victim's skull with sticks or empty vodka bottles.

The pattern of his murders changed in 2005, with Pichushkin inflicting repeated hammer blows to the victims' heads and inserting vodka bottles into their wounds. Notably, several victims resided in the same housing complex as Pichushkin.

The investigation into Pichushkin's crimes gained momentum with the 2006 murder of his coworker, Marina Moskalyova. Despite initial suspicions, Moskalyova accompanied Pichushkin on a fatal walk. Her body was later discovered in Bitsa Park, bearing the killer's trademark injuries. Crucial evidence came from a Moscow Metro ticket found on Moskalyova, leading to surveillance footage that captured her final hours with Pichushkin.

Convicted of 49 murders and three attempted murders, Pichushkin shockingly requested the court to acknowledge an additional 11 victims, bringing his claimed death toll to 60.
