Benito Mussolini Death Pictures & Autopsy Photos
Benito Mussolini, the Fascist dictator of Italy, was executed on April 28, 1945, in Giulino di Mezzegra, a small village near Lake Como in northern Italy. His death marked the violent end of his 23-year rule and Italy's involvement in World War II. In the final days of the war, as Allied forces were liberating Italy, Mussolini attempted to flee to Switzerland. He was captured on April 27, 1945, by Italian partisans while traveling with a convoy of German soldiers and Italian Fascist officials. The following day, Mussolini, along with his mistress Clara Petacci and several other Fascist leaders, were executed by the partisans. Following their execution, the bodies of Mussolini, Petacci, and the others were taken to Milan, where they were hung upside down at a service station in the Piazzale Loreto, an act of public display and retribution for the Fascist regime's crimes. This square had significant symbolic importance as it was the site where fifteen partisans had been executed by the Fascists one year earlier.
