On the evening of December 8, 1980, the world was rocked by the tragic news of John Lennon's death. Lennon, a former member of the legendary Beatles and a renowned solo artist, was returning to his apartment at the Dakota in New York City with his wife, Yoko Ono. As they walked through the archway of their residence, a figure emerged from the shadows – Mark David Chapman, a 25-year-old Beatles fan from Hawaii who had been loitering around the Dakota for most of the day.

At approximately 10:50 PM, Chapman stepped forward and called out to Lennon. As Lennon turned, Chapman fired five shots from a .38 caliber revolver, four of which struck Lennon in the back and shoulder. Lennon, critically wounded, was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:15 PM. Chapman, who remained at the scene reading J.D. Salinger's novel "The Catcher in the Rye," was promptly arrested and later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, receiving a sentence of 20 years to life in prison.
