Decades ago, Varosha (Famagusta) on the island of Cyprus was the top resort destination in the eastern Mediterranean. In 1974, the Turkish intervention in Cyprus brought the area under Turkish control, where it remains off limits to modern Cypriots. While the seaside resort buildings remain mostly in tact, the streets and beaches of Varosha remain empty, save for a single Turkish-only resort along the coast. We saw many amazing abandoned structures in our research, but we never expected to see a completely abandoned beach resort.

In the early 1970’s, the Varosha quarter in Famagusta, Cyprus was one of the Mediterranean’s most popular and glamorous tourist destinations.

Population of the area grew to about 39,000 people, but by the end of 1974 the town would be conquered by Turkish troops, fenced off completely, and have a population of zero.

Today the former millionaire’s playground resort still stands vacant and fenced off, guarded by Turkish soldiers and doubtful to open anytime soon.

What a shame.

It always gets me in these abandoned places pictures the nice old cars. Some of them may still run or be worth restoring--but they're left to collect dust. Blah, that's just me though, I'm a car guy.
