Re: DR's Official MMA Thread

In all seriousness, it's a controversial topic regarding marijuana as a pain killer.

During the last decade, rigorous scientific methods have been applied to determine the effects of cannabinoids on nociceptive neurotransmission. Cannabinoids have been observed to markedly decrease signalling in specific neural pathways that transmit messages about pain. These effects were found to be due to the suppression of spinal and thalamic nociceptive neurons, and independent of any actions on either the motor system or sensory neurons that transmit messages related to non-nociceptive stimulation. Spinal, supraspinal, and peripheral sites of cannabinoid analgesia have been identified. The discovery of endocannabinoids raised the question of their natural role in pain. Multiple lines of evidence indicate that endocannabinoids serve naturally to suppress pain. While it is now clear that cannabinoids suppress nociceptive neurotransmission, more work is needed to establish the clinical utility of these compounds. The few human studies conducted to date produced mixed results, with more promising findings coming from studies of clinical pain as compared with experimental pain. The therapeutic potential of cannabinoids remains an important topic for future investigations.
Here's a quote from a guy who knows it all about mma and getting baked. Joe Rogan.

“I think it is a performance-enhancing drug. If it wasn’t, a huge majority of jiu-jitsu guys wouldn’t be using it before they train. A lot of Brazilian guys use marijuana before they train. A lot of American jiu-jitsu guys use it before they train. And they don’t do it because it hurts them; they do it because it helps them.”

“I think if testosterone is legal, you can easily make the argument that marijuana should be legal under a doctor’s prescription. I do believe that they’re both performance-enhancing substances. I think that testosterone is in fact, more of a performance-enhancer.”

Re: DR's Official MMA Thread

I find it strange to think someone would smoke a joint to not feel pain before training, that doesnt seem beneficial at all, if you dont feel it all your not learning, or that's the approach i always took when skating anyway, the knocks n hits make ya not do something again.

if they really need to take painkillers, it still doesnt make sense to have such an de-motivational drug when they could just pop a paracetamol or a real painkiller which wouldnt turn them into the biggest procrastinators

The main reason being is.....

i re-iterate

i dont hear about them testing for things like shrooms, acid, peyote, salvia, mdma, 2cb, pills, heroin or other drugs that are not beneficial to a sportsman

i thought weed bashing was just something politicians and religious nuts did, didnt realise sports commissions did it too

Marijuana is banned from combat sports in North America the same reason cocaine and heroin are: they're illegal.

i do remember in 2008 they stopped the belgian champion from cycling the tour de france cause he tested positive for cocaine after celebrating his victory in the belgian championship

if someone had a medical card would they still be punished if testing positive during a fight?

You would have to disclose everything prior to getting licensed. The government allows fighters trt just as long as they're eligible and then monitored.
