Utrecht Hospital 1890
The photographs on display came from the archives of Utrecht`s university hospital – records of medical disorders, photographed since circa 1890. In the early days of medical photography clinical standards had yet to be formulated for photographic images. Consequently, many photographs are more poignant and beautiful than they are scientific. Light, space and patients` complete submission to doctors and photographers evoke feelings of compassion, surprise, embarrassment and amusement rather than disgust or scientific curiosity. One of the conditons was`Utrechtse Krop` (Utrecht goitre) was the name given to a thyroid condition once common in the Dutch town of Utrecht, due to a deficiency of iodine in drinking water. The exhibition Utrechtse Krop in De Kabinetten van De Vleeshal centred around the appeal of illness and the fragility of our physical being. |

I have 100 silly things to say about these pictures, but I am so struck by the beauty of the photography, I am uncharacteristically unable to comment. |

What's going on with the little girl and the man being bandaged together? That's weird :-/

Re: Utrecht Hospital 1890
The second photo may be the creepiest I've seen in awhile.. what happened there?! The little girl with the dark skin across her eye is stunningly beautiful.. and what's up with the two who are bandaged together?

Re: Utrecht Hospital 1890
Wow absolutely great post . Thank you Kelly. I agree with Viking on this one there are a thousand smart ass comments I to could make but somehow I just can't. These are just very stricking images . I also agree with the person commenting on the young girl with the scaring or perhaps port wine syndrome on her face . While she has this terrible scaring on her face at the same time she also still has the beautiful facial structure of a young girl. Excellent work Kelly Thank You so much. |
