These photos are called "memento mori" - the victorians loved these kind of things, sometimes the eyelids of the deceased were painted to make it look like their eyes were open. Also family members would sometimes prop the body up in a normal postion to have their photo took . I kinda like these kind of photos, but yeah the baby ones are sad.

I recall reading somewhere that he photos of the dead children were the only thing the parents had to show that the child had actually lived. Of necessity toys and clothes would be passed down to other children, at least in the case of the poor.
In my case, I have stretch-marks and a nice C-section scar to show my boy was here. That and the pile of sweaty socks I found behind his door.

lol kimosabe, me too ! yeah i read that about having them to show the child once existed. as for preserving souls, ive never heard of dat, think maybe it was just for the movie. doesnt anyone else see the face in the 2nd photo then?
