A TEXAS woman decapitated her newborn baby and ate pieces of his body before turning a knife on herself, police said today.

Otty Sanchez was covered in blood and screaming "I killed my baby, I want to die'' when police arrived at the modest San Antonio home.

"She mentioned that someone or something told her to do it and she was hearing voices, so that leads us to believe she was experiencing some kind of mental crisis,'' said police spokesman Joe Rios.

The woman had separated from the baby's father about a week earlier and was living with her mother and sister, who were helping to care for the baby born on June 30.

She was discovered holding the decapitated baby by her mother on Sunday morning.

She appeared to have ingested parts of her child - including the brain - after attacking him with a knife, Mr Rios said.

Otty Sanchez's sister and her sister's two children, ages five and seven, were in the house at the time of the killing but were not harmed.

San Antonio police chief William McManus described the crime scene as so grisly police officers barely spoke to each other while looking through the house. Parts of the child were missing, including pieces Ms Sanchez allegedly ate.

"At this particular scene you could have heard a pin drop," Mr McManus said. "No one was speaking. It was about as sombre as it could have been."

Otty Sanchez's aunt, Gloria Sanchez, told AP her niece has been "in and out" of a psychiatric ward, and the hospital called several months ago looking to check up on her. She did not elaborate on the nature of her niece's health problems.

"Otty didn't mean to do that. She was not in her right mind," she said. She said her family was devastated.

Otty Sanchez, 33, was charged with capital murder and remained in hospital today.

Aren't most women out of their mind while they are pregnant and months after the baby is born... but I didn't know women are that crazy.. Pray to God I don't become like that when I have my first.

Otty should have remained in the psychiatric ward. Most of the people who do this don't think about having babies.

Euthanizing the mom would be the most loving thing to do. Should she ever recover, it would only be to be aghast at what she has done.

Yes they are. I had post parteum depression after my baby and I wasnt that bad. I would have hurt myself before anyone else. This lady probably had post parteum psycosis, woman with that actually hallucinate and hear voices. Its really rare though. Most women with it are bipolar.
