CONEY ISLAND (WABC) -- A manhunt is underway for a suspect who committed allegedly raped an 82-year-old woman inside her own Brooklyn home.

Police say the man hid in the house in Coney Island, then attacked and raped her before stealing some items and fleeing the scene.

One of the victim's family members spoke exclusively to Eyewitness News.

"An innocent 82-year-old, minding her business in front of her house," he said.

The suspect, he said, terrorized his loved one for hours, first threatening to kill her then oddly offering her a bottle of water.

Black powder used by detectives to pick up fingerprints covers several doors in the home, and sources say police are analyzing a lot of evidence. A neighbor's surveillance camera picked up the suspect lurking outside of the woman's home around 1:30 a.m. Monday.

She was outside sweeping, as she is meticulous about keeping her home clean, when police say the suspect snuck inside and hid in the victim's bedroom.

When she came inside, she watched TV in the living room for several hours. But once she laid down on her bed to go to sleep, she spotted the suspect, who told her at knife-point to hand over money.

"He went through all the jewelry," the relative said. "Tried to take, there wasn't really any jewelry. He was upset, and he went through all the drawers, put everything back nice and neatly. It didn't make any sense."

Police say he then beat and raped the mother of two.

"It doesn't appear like this is this first time he's done it, and he's going to do it again," the relative said. "And next time, you might have a murder. All right? Because she was very close to getting murdered. You know? He could have just snapped, and he could have killed her. But they have to catch this guy, and they have to catch this guy quickly."

Sources say the suspect did leave with clothing belonging to the victim's late husband, an umbrella and some jewelry.

The victim was checked out at the hospital, and she is staying with family members.

Local fruit shop employee Mark Andrew, 38, identified the face on a wanted poster as, 18-year-old Asa Robert, a neighborhood panhandler.

“They should hang him here, here in the middle of Brighton Beach,” Andrew said. “How can you do something like this? Terrible. This is not human.”
