A man who was stabbed to death on a train in Surrey was with his 14-year-old son at the time, police have said.

A manhunt is under way for the 51-year-old victim's killer, who fled from the train after the stabbing during a "vicious fight" on board the London-bound service.

The victim and the attacker had both boarded the train at the same station.

British Transport Police say they do not believe the pair were known to each other.

Supt Paul Langley said the teenager would have seen the killing.

"This would have been an horrific and hugely traumatic event to have witnessed and we are providing him with as much support as possible," he said.

Early indications suggested the boy's father received multiple stab wounds in the attack.

The offender is described as black, in his 20s or 30s, with a slim build and a beard, dressed all in black with white trainers.

People have been urged not to approach him but to call 999.

Police have said the suspect and victim had got on the train at London Road (Guildford) at 13:01 GMT and the offender left the service at Clandon, five minutes later. Officers boarded the train at the next stop, Horsley.

Describing the attack as "violent and deadly", Supt Langley said there had been a number of sightings of the suspect, who fled towards Dedswell Drive.

He said officers were in the area looking for the killer and BTP was working closely with Surrey Police and the National Police Air Service.

An eyewitness to the killing told the BBC there had been a "vicious fight" on the train.
One social media user who said she had been on the train praised the "incredible" response of the guards and driver in a tweet to South Western Railway.

She wrote: "I was on this train, how those guards and especially that train driver went into action was nothing short of incredible."
Oliver Thompson, a 16-year-old student living in Clandon, said he was stopped by police in the area at roughly 14:30 and asked if he had seen a "man running from the station".

A little later he saw police helicopters circling the area before being joined by "a police van with high-powered lights" as night fell.

"It is definitely unnerving to think there is a murderer maybe somewhere in the village."

Matt Phelps, 35, who works at a business on Epsom Road in West Clandon, said there were three helicopters circling overhead when they locked up and went home.

"To think there was someone like that potentially hiding around the corner somewhere certainly made us want to pack up and go home quicker than usual," he said.

After the attacker left the train at Clandon, emergency services were called to help the injured man when the train reached Horsley.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling described the stabbing as "tragic" and said: "Our deepest sympathies are with the victim and their family."

The train remained at Horsley station for several hours, blocking the line into London Waterloo.

Rail services were suspended between Guildford and Effingham Junction while police carried out investigations, but South Western Railway has said trains are now calling at Clandon and Horsley again.

Relatives have paid tribute to "devoted family man" Lee Pomeroy, 51, who was stabbed to death on a train in Surrey.

The married father of one from Guildford was on his way into London with his 14-year-old son for a day out on Friday when he was attacked.

In a statement his family called the attack, the day before his birthday, "horrific and pointless".

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and a 27-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

'Violent attack'

The statement from the family added: "He was a devoted family man and did everything for his family.

"He was an honourable man and would always help somebody who was in trouble.

"Lee would have had his birthday today, but did not get to see his presents.

"He was an honest, bright person, who loved music very much, he knew history and art and he was a bachelor of science in maths."

Mr Pomeroy and his attacker both got on the train at London Road station in Guildford at about 13:00 GMT.

Assistant Chief Constable Sean O'Callaghan told BBC Breakfast the two men, who it is believed did not know each other, moved through a carriage having a discussion for a few minutes until "that argument escalated to the unprovoked violent attack".

The father and son had been heading to London Waterloo, set to "spend some quality time together" in the city, relatives said.

More than 40 officers from British Transport Police are working alongside Surrey Police.

On Saturday morning the forces were still searching for the murder weapon between Horsley and Farnham.

The wife of a man who was stabbed to death on a train in Surrey moved to the UK from her native Russia because she felt the British were more civilised, it has emerged, as the police were given more time to question the key suspect.

Svetlana Pomeroy's 51-year-old husband, Lee, died in front of their only son, when he was stabbed in the neck by a fellow passenger on board a train travelling from their home town of Guildford into London on Friday.

A friend said Mrs Pomeroy, who married her husband in 2001, remained too upset to comment on the tragedy.

But writing to friends online five years after moving to Britain, she remarked on how she admired British culture and hospitality.

She wrote: "I love how people here wish to be hospitable, how they smile, how they take care of nature. People still tend to build families, plus there are laws to support women."

Mr Pomeroy, an IT consultant, had been travelling to London with their 14-year-old son, in order to celebrate what would have been his 52nd birthday the following day when he became embroiled in a row with a fellow passenger that culminated in him being stabbed to death.

In a statement his devastated family said: "Lee took his son on a trip to London hoping to spend some quality time with him which was cut short by an horrific and pointless attack."

The maths graduate was described as an "honest, bright person" who loved music and art.

The family statement went on: "He was a devoted family man and did everything for his family. He was an honourable man and would always help somebody who was in trouble. He was a loving husband and father, he will be deeply missed by all his family.”

Neighbours described the couple as quiet and polite and said Mr Pomeroy was clearly devoted to his son.

The teenager was last night being supported by specially trained police officers and was said to be deeply traumatised.

Police revealed that Mr Pomeroy lost his life after an argument with another passenger as they boarded a Waterloo bound train at Guildford London Road station quickly escalated into "extraordinary violence".

A huge manhunt was launched on Friday afternoon in Surrey after the suspect fled the scene.

A 35-year-old man, who was arrested at an address in Farnham on Saturday morning, remained in custody as officers were given a further 12 hours to question him.

How a trivial argument on a Surrey train turned to murder in just three minutes

A father of one, who was taking his teenage son on a day trip to London, was brutally stabbed to death within three minutes of getting into a minor dispute with a fellow rail passenger, it emerged on Sunday.

Lee Pomeroy, a 51-year-old IT consultant from Surrey, exchanged words with another man as they boarded the 1.01pm South Western Trains service from Guildford London Road station bound for Waterloo.

But almost immediately the argument escalated into extreme violence and by the time the train reached the next stop of Clandon, just four minutes later, Mr Pomeroy lay dying from a stab wound to the neck.

British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed that the victim and his attacker were not known to one another prior to the incident and said the violent attack had been unprovoked.

The suspect fled the train when it pulled into Clandon station at 1.05pm, leading to a massive manhunt across Surrey.

A man and woman were arrested early Saturday morning at an address in Farnham and were being questioned in connection with the incident.

The man was arrested on suspicion of murder while the 27-year-old woman, who was said by locals to be a mother of one was being questioned on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Grant Christy, who lives in the same block, said: "At six they smashed the door down, woke me up immediately, obviously.

“I heard the police shouting, 'put your hands up, turn around', all that sort of thing and then it went quiet.

"They led her out first with the kid, barefoot, put her in a police wagon over there, then a few minutes later they pulled him out handcuffed."

A second resident: “They have only just moved in. Just a few months ago. He wasn’t there to begin with, he moved in after she did.”

Neighbours in the same block said they had experienced problems with anti-social behaviour and had reported the matter to the police.

A Surrey Police spokesman said: “We attended that address on November 29. We’ve had other calls since. There is an ongoing dispute between neighbours. It’s unrelated to the BTP investigation.”

Revealing more details about what had unfolded on the lunchtime commuter service, BTP assistant chief constable, Sean O'Callaghan, said the whole drama had taken less than five minutes from start to finish and appeared to have erupted following a "verbal discussion".

He said: "That discussion lasted three to four minutes, it moved through one carriage from where they first boarded into another carriage, and that argument escalated to the unprovoked violent attack that sadly resulted in the death."

Mr Pomeroy, who would have celebrated his 52-birthday on Saturday, had planned the day with his son in order to spend some "quality time" with him, according to his family. His wife, Svetlana, was said to be too upset to cmment on the tragedy.

The boy was said to have been left deeply traumatised by what he had witnessed.

Fellow passengers described how the two men had begun arguing as they got onto the train but very soon began trading blows.

It is understood Mr Pomeroy moved the away from his son as the row escalated but then his attacker produced a knife and he received a fatal wound to his neck.

After his attacker fled at Clandon station, the train moved off before the alarm could be raised, and it was only when it arrived at Horsley station four minutes later that police and ambulance crews were alerted.

By the time paramedics arrived Mr Pomeroy had lost a huge amount of blood and suffered a fatal heart attack.

A female passenger, who asked not to be named, said: "There was a lot of blood everywhere in the carriage. I don't think the poor chap stood a chance. The police who were here first started to give him CPR but it was apparently too late to save him and he died while the train was in the station."

Officers from Surrey Police joined their colleagues from BTP as a a huge search was mounted for the killer.

The hunt was initially concentrated on the fields and lanes around Clandon after several villagers reported seeing a suspicious looking man wandering around.

Helicopters carrying heat seeking cameras and specially trained sniffer dogs joining in the search, but as darkness fell the suspect remained at large.

Locals were warned not to approach the suspect, who was described as a black man, around 6ft tall, with a bald head and beard wearing a black tracksuit and white trainers.

The search continued throughout the night but it was scaled back at around 6am yesterday when police announced they had made two arrests in Farnham, around 15 miles away from where the stabbing took place.

The suspects continued to be questioned on Saturday night.

Darren Pencille, 35, of Willbury Road, Farnham, is accused of killing Lee Pomeroy, 51, on a Guildford to London train on Friday.

Chelsea Mitchell, 27, also of Willbury Road, has been charged with assisting an offender.

Both have been remanded in custody to appear at Staines Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Mr Pencille has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

A man killed on a train in front of his teenage son was stabbed nine times, a court has heard.

Lee Pomeroy, 51, from Guildford, died in the attack on a train near the town on Friday.

Darren Pencille, 35, of no fixed abode, made two separate court appearances on Monday charged with murder and possessing an offensive weapon.

He told Staines magistrates: "Innocent until proven guilty," adding: "I'm paranoid. I'm hearing voices."

He later appeared at Guildford Crown Court, along with Chelsea Mitchell, 27, from Willbury Road in Farnham, who is accused of assisting an offender by helping Mr Pencille leave the scene and change his appearance.

Both were remanded in custody until their next court appearance on 7 February.

During the first hearing, magistrates were told Mr Pomeroy, an IT consultant, suffered nine stab wounds in the attack in front of his 14-year-old son.

Mr Pomeroy, who would have celebrated his 52nd birthday on Saturday, was described by his family as "an honourable man and would always help somebody who was in trouble".

"He was a devoted family man and did everything for his family," they said.

Mr Pomeroy died on the 12:58 GMT train service between Guildford and London Waterloo which he and his son boarded at London Road station on Friday afternoon.

A man who stabbed a passenger to death in a row on a train has been found guilty of murder and jailed for life.

Lee Pomeroy was travelling with his 14-year-old son when he was "savagely" stabbed 18 times by Darren Pencille on the Guildford to London service.

Mr Pomeroy died with his son next to him at Horsley station on 4 January, the day before his 52nd birthday.

Old Bailey jurors rejected Pencille's claim he acted in self defence and he was ordered to serve at least 28 years.

Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb said anyone who watched the "breathtakingly shocking" CCTV footage shown during the trial would struggle to see how Pencille could claim to have been acting in self-defence.

"I am satisfied you were the aggressor throughout," she told him.

The judge told Pencille "you picked on the wrong man - he stood up for himself", but she also said Mr Pomeroy had not known about Pencille's paranoid schizophrenia.

Sentencing, she said: "Truly this was a senseless loss of life."

Pencille killed the father-of-one when a "chance encounter" escalated into a frenzied and fatal attack, the court heard.

He first stabbed the IT consultant in the neck, then inflicted 17 more injuries in the 20 seconds that followed.

Pencille's girlfriend Chelsea Mitchell, of Farnham, Surrey, was found guilty by a majority of 11-1 of assisting him.

She was sentenced to 28 months in prison.

Charles Falk, representing Mitchell, said in mitigation she had showed a "misguided sense of loyalty driven by her dependence."

The judge said to her: "I am sure you were acting under misguided loyalty", but then added it was not any sort of excuse.

She took him to her Farnham flat, where they lived together. There he shaved off his beard and had a shower before she drove him to a Surrey beauty spot and then on to visit his flat in Bognor Regis, West Sussex.

They returned to her flat later that night and were both arrested there in the early hours after a manhunt by police.

The court heard a victim impact statement from Mr Pomeroy's widow, Svetlana, who described his murder as a "senseless loss of life" which had been made worse because it happened in front of their son.

She said: "I miss my husband every day and to compound the situation [his son] was with his father when he died.

"I have lost my friend, my soul mate and my guide. Lee loved life and it's been cruelly cut short.

"On Friday January 4 my life and that of my son changed forever. My husband of 18 years died in a sudden, violent and distressing way."

She said her husband was a vibrant, highly intelligent perfectionist, a loving father and her "guiding light".

With regards to their son, who cannot be named for legal reasons, Mrs Pomeroy wrote: "He's frightened to be alone at night. He is terrified of loss and of losing me. He's returned to school but seems to have lost perspective."

Jurors heard they may have been blocking Pencille's way, prompting him to make the remark: "Ignorance is bliss."

The row escalated into swearing as Mr Pomeroy demanded an apology, but then Pencille produced a knife and stabbed him in the neck, cutting through the jugular vein.

The court heard Pencille, who declined to give evidence during his trial, had 14 previous convictions for 19 different offences over a 19-year period, including possession of offensive weapons, violence and dishonesty.

In 2010, he had stabbed a flatmate in the neck over a minor disagreement.

Mitchell had seven previous convictions for 10 different offences, including assault, threatening behaviour, drunk and disorderly behaviour and battery.

After Pencille and Mitchell were convicted, Jason Corden-Bowen from the Crown Prosecution Service said Pencille murdered Mr Pomeroy by "savagely inflicting 18 wounds".

He said: "Although he claimed innocence, Pencille did not give evidence in court. His claims to be acting in self-defence were proved to be false."

Mr Cordon-Bowen said: "This was a brutal and senseless killing of an innocent father who has been taken away from his family."

Det Ch Insp Sam Blackburn, from British Transport Police described the killer as "devious and dangerous".

He said: "Quite clearly with his previous convictions, where he also stabbed another man in the neck, and his propensity for carrying knives, he showed his dangerous, aggressive nature and that he wasn't afraid to use that knife on that train."

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr Blackburn said a brief argument resulted in a moment of "shocking violence" that ended with the death of an adored father, husband, brother and son.

He said: "No argument, however heated, should result in the violence seen that day and no family members should ever bear witnesses to the violent death of a loved one."
