Seven Day Old Baby Mauled by Family Dog

A week-old baby girl has been mauled by the family's pet dog at their home in Campbelltown in southwestern Sydney.

The child was sleeping in a bassinet at the end of her parents' bed when the Alaskan Malamute bit her on the face at 3.30am on Monday.

The newborn baby was taken to The Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

Sydney vet Rob Zammit said the breed is known and reported in the top 10 list of dogs that will attack people.

"They're a big dog, and it hears a baby crying ... it goes `what the hell's that' and bang, it attacks.

"It happens very, very quickly," he told 2GB Radio.

Rangers from Campbelltown City Council will be contacted about the dog.

As it stands there are no photos of the baby or confirmed photo of the dog, but the picture above was said to be from the home so obviously the Malamute is it.

Popular opinion so far is that the dog isn't in the wrong and the parents are, would love to hear what everyone else thinks?

This is what I think...

I think it would be a good idea to euthanize the baby to spare it any more pain, especially if it has been left disfigured. I think the dog should then receive the lethal injection too as it is clearly dangerous. I think a procedure should then be done to ensure the parents are unable to have any more kids as they have demonstrated exceedingly poor judgement. I also think that if they have any other kids they should be put into foster care.

Hehe. Definitely @ the parents, I don't usually belittle or swear against new parents, but to allow a Malamute to roam freely around something he or she sees as an attention thief, especially as the dog was not brought up around babies... bad, bad idea.

Unless someone comes in and starts talking about how "If it was a Pitbull the baby would not be in hospital it would be fucking dead with it's skull crushed and face completely disfigured."

It's only a matter of time before someone says this. I won't, not because it's not true (it clearly is), but because I'd prefer to keep out of such a debate.
