WWE Hall of Famer Roderick George Toombs, a.k.a. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, passed away at his home in Hollywood, CA at the age of 61, according to TMZ Sports. According to the report, Piper died from cardiac arrest in his sleep on Thursday night. He was discovered today.

Piper was diagnosed with cancer in 2006. He was scheduled to wrestle at the Survivor Series that year, teaming with Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Sgt. Slaughter and Dusty Rhodes against the Spirit Squad, however he was replaced in the match by Ron Simmons. He stated in an interview with The Hillsboro Tribune last November that he was now cancer free.

"The cancer is gone as far as I know," Piper said. "I've passed the five-year mark. It's one of those things that haunts you a little bit, especially when you go as hard as I did. I'm doing OK, but about a year ago, I was driving home and I couldn't breathe and almost passed out. I was trying to ignore it, but I had a blood clot in my lung and spent some time in the hospital. I need to start being careful. I'm not sure we're invincible anymore."

Another great gone.

People don't give enough credit to these guys. They destroy their brains and bodies to entertain people, and do something they love to do. But it cost so many their lives, and usually many years before they actually die.

The only reason there are not as many wrestlers dying, as there was 10 years ago, is that most of the greats are now dead gone.

But lets face it, if your job was to get jacked up, be superman, party endlessly, and fuck anything that moves, most DR members would give up their jobs and livelihood to live the chaotic dream that was 80s and 90s wrestling.

Not much for WWF but I met him years ago at the Santa Fe Opera for the Peter Lieberson Ashoka's Dream 1995 or 96. He was very nice and smart.
