He was basically an armed thug  Police overkill but I can't get into their mindset and understand what they constantly have to deal with. |

Better what some (almost always inexperienced) people consider "overkill" than 'underkill'. Perps have many times severely injured or killed police officers before succumbing to wounds delivered by police officers...because the officers did not use enough force. Once committed to a lethal action, never give the bad guy any kind of chance. No chance at all. Dead is dead. 10 rounds 'too many' (in the opinion of the uninformed) is far preferable to 1 round too few.  The fact is that no one can tell exactly what is going on at the time. 15 rounds can be fired, but it is not known in that moment where - or if - any of them actually hit the perp. Especially in the dark, under stress, with the perp jumping around, partially covered/concealed, etc. |
