Re: North Carolina Teen Decapitates His Mother Because He Felt Like It
Four different meds to try to keep him stable and this still happens. Man, we sort of know how the brain works but we have no idea how to reliably fix it if it's not working right. Hopefully mental health treatment gets a lot better soon, because right now a lot of what we do involves throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks... and hoping no one gets decapitated in the process. I'm lucky that my meds are just for depression, but I've still had some awful experiences while they were being adjusted and actually made the depression worse instead of better. I hope the two other kids who were at home are too young to remember anything. Can't imagine having to live with seeing or hearing your brother murder and decapitate your mom. :( |

Re: North Carolina Teen Decapitates His Mother Because He Felt Like It
Pretty sure this is a rare occurrence. In fact, statistics clearly show that the mentally ill are far more likely to the the victim of a crime, than the perpetrator of one. "Myth: People with mental health problems are violent and unpredictable. Fact: The vast majority of people with mental health problems are no more likely to be violent than anyone else. Most people with mental illness are not violent and only 3%-5% of violent acts can be attributed to individuals living with a serious mental illness. In fact, people with severe mental illnesses are over 10 times more likely to be victims of violent crime than the general population. You probably know someone with a mental health problem and don't even realize it, because many people with mental health problems are highly active and productive members of our communities." link I would consider the more likely influences that he had a mental illness but was Untreated, refused to take his medication, or he was on illicit drugs. "Mentally ill people are disproportionately victimized by violent crime. The largest crime-reducing benefit of helping persons with mental illness would be in reducing crimes against the mentally ill. Some types of severe mental illness increase the risk that a person will perpetrate a violent crime. Risk varies based on many other factors, such as substance abuse, or unemployment. Many of the risks are from secondary effects of the mental illness; for example, cognitive difficulties make employment difficult or impossible. Many mental illnesses have a genetic component, although the genetic effects are far from fully understood. Untreated severe mental illness is particularly significant in homicide—the extreme end of the criminal spectrum. Such illness is even more significant for mass murders of strangers." link |

MCMURPHY: "Jesus, I mean you guys do nothing but complain about how you can’t stand it in this place here and then you haven’t got the guts just to walk out? What do you think you are for Christ sake, crazy or something? Well, you’re not! You’re not! You’re no crazier than the average asshole out walking around on the streets."

Re: North Carolina Teen Decapitates His Mother Because He Felt Like It
You know it. "The North Carolina teen who beheaded his mother on Monday was in the U.S. illegally and had been wanted by federal immigration officials, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced on Tuesday. Oliver Funes-Machado, 18, killed his mother, Yesenia Funes Beatriz Machado at her house in Franklin County, N.C., around noon local time on Monday. He then called 911 to report the incident. Officers said when the first deputy arrived at the scene, Funes-Machado walked out of the house with a butcher knife and his mother's head in his hands. "It was a gruesome scene. … I can't tell you how many wounds," Franklin County Sheriff Kent Winstead told WRAL. The suspect, who is originally from Honduras and did not have legal permission to be in the U.S., has been charged with first-degree murder. Shortly after, ICE issued a detainer on Funes-Machado, which would ensure federal immigration agents are alerted and can pick him up from jail or prison if he makes bond." source. |
