Re: At Least Ten Killed in Charlie Hebdo Shooting in France

I see many radical Muslims promoting the killing of anyone they dislike and calling for a holy war, all the time. How can you tolerate this, but not the other
The answer might be easier than you think: the Bavarian government does not have the copyrights of the Quran.

Paris (AFP) - The cover of the first edition of the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo since its staff were murderously attacked by Islamist gunmen last week shows a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed crying and holding up a "Je suis Charlie" sign under the words: "All is forgiven".

The front page was released to media ahead of the magazine's publication on Wednesday. Three million copies of the special "survivors' edition" are being printed and will be made available in 25 countries, translated into 16 languages because of international demand.

Worldwide sympathy and "Je Suis Charlie" solidarity rose up around Charlie Hebdo in the wake of the attack against it last Wednesday, in which 12 people were killed including five of its top cartoonists.

But the magazine's fresh caricature of Mohammed could renew fury by some extremely devout Muslims who believe it is forbidden to depict their prophet in any way.

The two gunmen who attacked Charlie Hebdo's offices in Paris last Wednesday said as they left the scene that they had "avenged the Prophet Mohammed".

The staff first started receiving death threats in 2006 when they republished cartoons by a Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, that had triggered violent riots in some Muslim countries.

The offices of the weekly were firebombed by suspected Islamists in 2011 when it published other cartoons making fun of Mohammed, causing no injuries.

The surviving employees of Charlie Hebdo have sworn to uphold its tradition of lampooning all religions, politicians, celebrities and news events. Islamic extremists have often been ridiculed in its pages through provocative and irreverent cartoons.

We will "cede nothing" to extremists seeking to silence them, the publication's lawyer, Richard Malka, told French radio on Monday.

"In each edition for the past 22 years there has not been one where there have not been caricatures of the pope, Jesus, priests, rabbis, imams ou Mohammed," he said.

It would have been "surprising" if a Mohammed cartoon did not feature in the new issue, he said.

He stressed that Charlie Hebdo saw itself as "not a violent newspaper but an irreverent one".

- Working out of rival newspaper

The surviving Charlie Hebdo staff have since Friday been working out of the offices of another French newspaper, Liberation, with equipment loaned by other media organisations.

Their own blood-soaked offices remain sealed by police, with the entrance covered with flowers, pencils and candles in tribute to the dead.

The gunmen who had attacked Charlie Hebdo, brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi, claimed to belong to the jihadist group Al-Qaeda in Yemen.

They were killed on Friday, as was an accomplice claiming affiliation to the rival Islamic State group, Amedy Coulibaly, in separate but coordinated French commando raids on sites in and near Paris where they had taken hostages.

In all 17 people and the three Islamist attackers were killed in three days of violence.

The 44-year-old Charlie Hebdo newspaper had been sliding towards bankruptcy before the attack against it. It used to typically sell only half of the 60,000 copies it printed weekly.

But since gaining worldwide notoriety, it has earned pledges of support from the French government and media groups.

With the attacks, the magazine has become a national symbol of free speech. Huge crowds, including 1.5 million in Paris in the biggest rally in French history, took to the streets Sunday, many carrying signs saying: "Je suis Charlie".

Honestly, sounds a little cryptic to me:who is forgiving who?
The prophet has forgiven Charlie Hebdo? Charlie Hebdo has forgiven the attackers? The prophet has forgiven both, Charlie Hebdo and the attackers?
Or there's a subtle reference to this movie that I haven't watched but after reading the plot i'd say it would make sense?

I'll get a copy of this issue anyway

Video emerges of gunman’s partner arriving in Turkey as authorities say six members of terror cell may be at large

Police in France are searching for possible accomplices of the gunmen who carried out last week’s terrorist attacks, as video footage was released of the partner of one of the attackers arriving in Turkey with another man.

The video shows Hayat Boumeddiene, now France’s most wanted woman, at immigration at Istanbul airport on 2 January, six days before her partner, Amédy Coulibaly, killed a policewoman in Paris. Coulibaly went on to murder four hostages at a kosher supermarket, before being killed in a shootout with police. On Monday the French government said it was clear he had help.

In the Istanbul footage, Boumeddiene is accompanied by Mehdi Sabri Belhouchine, a 23-year-old French national whose name had not appeared in connection with the attacks, and who was not on a terrorist watchlist. After crossing Turkey, the pair are said by Turkish authorities to have gone into part of Syria controlled by Islamic State (Isis), to which Coulibaly declared his allegiance before his death.

There are some reports that Chérif and Saïd Kouachi, the two gunmen who attacked the Charlie Hebdo offices and killed 12 people on Wednesday, had help. Some witnesses have talked of a third person at the scene of the attack on the magazine.

French police officials said on Monday that as many as six members of the terrorist cell involved in the attacks may still be at large, including a man who was seen driving a car registered to Boumeddiene.

‘The Simpsons’ stands with ‘Charlie Hebdo’ in tribute
The Simpsons paid tribute during Sunday’s episode to the 12 people killed last week in the attack on the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Before the final commercial break, an image briefly appeared of Maggie Simpson holding a flag “Je Suis Charlie” (“I am Charlie”), a slogan adopted by supporters of free speech in the wake of the shootings.

The image, with its blue, white and red background, would seem to be a nod to Emile Bayard’s iconic illustration of Cosette for Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables or, as some have suggested, Eugene Delacroix’s famous painting Liberty Leading the People.

Sunday’s episode, “Bart’s New Friend,” was originally a spec script written in 1990 by a young Judd Apatow. The script was resurrected by The Simpsons showrunner Al Jean and given a polish by the show’s runners after Apatow talked about it on stage.

Re: At Least Ten Killed in Charlie Hebdo Shooting in France

I'm surprised they didn't get attacked sooner. They were seriously asking for it by their cartoons.

They did get "attacked" previously and if you think they were asking for it then I'm sure you've said many things asking for it, too. Just because you disagree with what someone is saying doesn't make attacking them justifiable.

I never once said I disagreed with these cartoons, in fact I find them funny. I just stated the obvious, they asked for what they received. I say shit all the time that would land me in similar situations but I'm not doing/saying it on a level like they do.

You're seriously asking for a tantrum if you refuse to give the toddler a sweetie.

Re: At Least Ten Killed in Charlie Hebdo Shooting in France

I would call these guys pretty ballsy for chasing after the police, but it is so ridiculous that police are unarmed in France...
