LA COUNTY TO PAY $1.17 MILLION FOR JAIL BEATING OF VISITOR

County Jail while trying to visit his brother. Los Angeles County will pay Gabriel Carrillo $1,175,000 for injuries he says he suffered after being beaten by county sheriff's deputies at Men's Central Jail in February 2011. He was there to visit his brother. "I'm more relieved than anything," said Carrillo on Thursday. "This was a wrongdoing to begin with." Carrillo and his lawyer, Ron Kaye, say deputies took him into a room away from other visitors for having a cellphone, which are not allowed inside the jail. "While handcuffed behind his back, was mercilessly beaten by three to five deputies," said Kaye. The L.A. County District Attorney's Office filed assault charges against Carrillo based on the deputies' report that said Carrillo attacked them. The charges were later dropped. "They came up with this whole fictitious story that they took off his handcuff in order to fingerprint him and he, this 5 foot 6 man, took on the entire department," said Kaye. The FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office filed criminal charges against 18 deputies for falsifying reports and inmate abuse. They include the deputies Carrillo said beat him. A trial date in federal court has not been set, but Carrillo says he'll testify if called. Carrillo's attorney and the sheriff's department say the settlement is not an admission of guilt by the sheriff's department. In a written statement to Eyewitness News, sheriff's department spokesperson Nicole Nishida said: "While there are several factors that are taken into consideration for a settlement, we have made enormous strides in training, investigating and evaluating use of force issues to address allegations of unnecessary force, including the installation of video cameras to assist in evaluating force incidents." "They're not entitled to admit that there was wrongdoing going on, but for them to settle, especially after the amount they settled at, it speaks volumes to knowing that there was wrongdoing going on," said Carrillo.  · |

Comrade Shoelessjojackson, you are most correct. It is obvious that the baby killed ham handed deputy oppressors of the people have once again unjustly battered a helpless protected minority. Th people must not allow this to stand! We must kill the Nazi thug deputies of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and show our displeasure with the unrightous criminal justice system by burning down our own homes and destroying our communities! This poor tiny oppressed peaceful minority working man deserves more of the self righteous tax payer's money. We must look beyond this victimized work's past criminal history and insubordinant attitude and see him for the true victim of the state's heavy handed program of systematically injuring and killing the oppressed minorities that he is. Death to tyrants...sic sempor tiranis! Forward into the past! Kill the police! Bla bla bla...working man...bla bla!

His face looks pretty bashed-up, though. My only question is this: how much force does it really take for 3 to 5 deputies to subdue a single man in a controlled environment?

Depends on the asshole at hand doesn't it? Don't forget, bruising looks way worse one or two days later...that's when you take the photos for maximum impact. Let up get all puffy and purple...the take the photo. Most jurors are so stupid, then don't pick up on this. I'll tell you a little secret...if five LA County Sheriff's Jail Deputies really beat this guy up, he'd be in a hospital room eating from a tube. He's a jackass just like his brother who he was visiting. He's got a fairly significant prior criminal record and he committed a misdemeanor by bringing a cell phone into a custody facility and was uncooperative when arrested. The guy's a turd...and his lawyer is an ambulance chasing specialist at suing both LASD and LAPD and other agencies for trumped up use of force suits. The whole case was a scam. Given the current political and anti police climate, the dipshit county council payed out like a loose slop machine.
