An Ohio inmate scheduled to die by lethal injection wants his upcoming execution delayed because he’s too obese.

Convicted killer Ronald Post, who tips the scales at more than 480 pounds, filed federal court papers Friday claiming that executing him in his current condition could result in a “torturous and lingering death.”

The 53-year-old was sentenced to death for the 1983 murder of an Ohio hotel clerk, and is scheduled to die Jan. 16 with a single dose of pentobarbital, typically injected through the arms.

Post believes his weight, vein access, scar tissue and other medical problems raise the likelihood his executioners would encounter severe problems. He’s also so big that the execution gurney might not hold him, his lawyers said in the court filing, according to the Associated Press.

“Indeed, given his unique physical and medical condition there is a substantial risk that any attempt to execute him will result in serious physical and psychological pain to him, as well as an execution involving a torturous and lingering death,” the filing said.

Post says he’s attempted to shed pounds but knee and back problems have made it too difficult.

The filing claims he used the prison exercise bike at Mansfield Correctional Institution “until it broke under his weight.”

Prison officials didn’t comment Monday.

The girth of prisoners has come up previously in death penalty cases in Ohio.

In 2008, federal courts rejected arguments by condemned double-killer Richard Cooey that he was too obese to die by injection. Cooey’s attorneys had argued that prison food and limited opportunities to exercise contributed to a weight problem that would make it difficult for the execution team to find a viable vein for lethal injection.

Cooey, who was 5-foot-7 and weighed 267 pounds, was executed Oct. 14, 2008.

The son of Post’s victim said last year that he’s still waiting for justice to be served for his mom, Helen Grace Vantz.

Post shot Vantz twice in the back of the head as he robbed the motel where she worked, making off with about $100 and a TV.

“Some have said that since it’s been so long just let [Post] stay in prison for the remainder of his natural life. No!” William Vantz wrote to the Morning Journal newspaper, adding, “We all have recourse to the law and it’s time he paid his debt to society. It’s way overdue!”
