Gunman Kills Three in US Abortion Clinic.

Haven't seen one of these for a while.

The suspect first engaged in a protracted gun battle with police but ultimately surrendered to officers inside the building about five hours after the start of the violence, which played out under a steady snowfall in Colorado's second-largest city.

The full extent of casualties was murky in the immediate aftermath of the gunman's capture, but police have now confirmed one officer was killed along with two civilians.
Mayor John Suthers paid tribute to police for getting the gunman into custody without further bloodshed.

"I was watching the officers' movement within the building on security cameras and communicating to the officers who were in the building and it was the most incredible work of officers trying to minimise the fatalities and get this guy in custody," he said.

"I was just incredibly impressed. While it's a terrible, terrible tragedy, the way the police handled this kept it from being an even worse tragedy."

Mr Suthers also expressed sympathy for the victims' loved ones.

"Obviously, we lost two civilian victims, we mourn the loss of a very brave police officer," he said.
State attorney general Cynthia Coffman posted a message on her official Twitter account lamenting the "tragic loss of life".

Lieutenant Catherine Buckley put the number of people taken to area hospitals at 11, including five officers, but it was not immediately clear whether that tally included the fatality reported by the police union.

A Reuters photographer at the scene saw a man in a white T-shirt, with his hands cuffed behind his back, being taken out of an armoured police vehicle and placed in an unmarked squad car.... blah blah..

This was happening when we got back from the movies today. During the movie, in the back of my mind, I was wondering if some lunatic was going to start shooting. It's pathetic that's what it's come to. Crazy nut jobs.

Multiple news reports tonight are identifying the man who shot and killed three people at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood as Robert Lewis Dear.

Dear is from North Carolina, a federal official said, but no other details were immediately available. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak about the ongoing investigation.

Three people were killed, including police officer Garrett Swasey, 44, in the standoff, The Denver Post reported.

"Nine other people, including five officers, were wounded and taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds," that report continued. "They are all in good condition, Colorado Springs Police Lt. Catherine Buckley said."

"Initial reports described the shooter's weapon as "a long gun," such as a rifle. Buckley said the suspect also carried "items" into the clinic, though authorities don't yet know whether they are explosive devices. Police saw a propane tank at the clinic, but officers do not know whether the suspect brought that to the clinic," The Post reported.

"Mayor John Suthers said the loss of life could have been more staggering had it not been for the "brave responding officers," KKTV reported.

"This is a terrible, terrible tragedy that happened today in Colorado Springs," he said.
