This photo shows 77-year-old cancer patient being nuzzled gently by her animal after she had been wheeled outside by nurses to meet it.

The creature who tenderly brushed up against her was named Bronwen and was her favourite horse. Hours later the grandmother-of-four died.

The lady had raised the animal since she was a foal during her time working at Merseyside's Haydock Park Racecourse before her retirement.

The mother-of-two had the tear-jerking reunion with two of her horses on Monday afternoon after her health deteriorated and was arranged by Wigan Infirmary.

Bereavement liaison specialist nurse said: "The nursing staff wheeled her down the corridor in her bed to the entrance.

"Bronwen walked steadily towards her and she gently called to Bronwen and the horse bent down tenderly and kissed her on the cheek as they said their last goodbyes."

The patient loved horses and had five others, three dogs, three cats and other pets.

The visit from two of her horses was arranged by bosses from Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust and her daughter.

The Deputy Director of Nursing, said: "This was obviously extremely important to her and her family.

"We feel privileged to have been able to provide this support at this crucial stage of her care.

"It's absolutely right we should pull out all the stops to ensure that our patients and their families receive personalised, compassionate and dignified care at the end of their life."

I just find these stories fucking stupid. A bunch of people bringing a dying lady and her horse together so that they can give themselves a pat on the back and then pose for photos.
