Re: Brazilians Say Women in Revealing Clothes Deserve Rape
I will never understand the values of certain cultures I guess, and this is one of those instances. However, I do reserve the right to look at a woman wearing revealing clothes |

Re: Brazilians Say Women in Revealing Clothes Deserve Rape
I have not heard but I have no doubt it has happened. Men are raped by other men (and women). I was raped when I was 17. It is certainly all about power and control. And it is the most frightening experience I have ever had. |

Re: Brazilians Say Women in Revealing Clothes Deserve Rape
it should be obvious that rape is never ok or justified. that being said, i dont trust polls in America, why would i trust one from Brazil?... how was this poll conducted? i have a hard time with the implication that any society would be able to survive if that were the general consensus were like this claims. brazil has 200+ million...the US has 300+ million... one report i found said there were 5,300 people raped between january and june of last year.... if we double this number, we get 10,600 people (about) in a year. keep in mind, the cases of reported rape in Brazil skyrocketed after a recent law change that expanded the legal definition of rape, which ended up encouraging women to come forward and report rape committed by relatives and people close to the victims. in the US, we average about 89,000 cases of rape annually. compare the two numbers... ...how does that happen if the general public apparently thinks rape is ok in brazil but the us general public disagrees? i couldnt find a study from the US but one study done in the UK found that 1 third of the population thought that women who act flirtatious are some what or fully responsible for their own rapes. as disgusting as that opinion may be, i dont think it is nearly as prevalent as this study claims it is in brazil. the general tone and obsession (really) for the female body in brazil, the number of reported rapes compared to the US, as well as the cultural importance of religion there (they are hosting World Youth Day, a catholic funded thing, there)... just doesnt make this poll seem accurate. it does make me wonder why there are so many cases of rape at all and just how many arent being reported. |
