Between 1966 and 2021, there have been 175 mass shootings which met the criteria for
inclusion in the database. These were conducted by 179 mass shooters.
• Average age of shooters is 34 years old. The median age is 33 years old.
Youngest shooter was age 11.
o Oldest shooter was age 70.
• Average mass shootings per year is just slightly more than 3.
o Average mass shootings over the past ten years is 5.5.
o Average mass shootings over the past five years is 6.2.
o The most mass shootings in one year was nine (9) which occurred in 2018.
• By far the most common location type for mass shootings is the workplace (54), followed by
shootings in general public commerce (33), and restaurants/bars (23).

The Monterey mass shooter was once a dancer at the studio where he killed 10 people during Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations.

Huu Can Tran, 72, taught lessons at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio almost every night in the early 2000s when he lived five minutes away in the San Gabriel Valley.

Tran's friends, who was close to the gunman from around the early 2010’s, revealed that he was 'hostile to a lot of people' at the studio and believed they said 'evil things about him.'

The gunman's ex-wife also revealed that she met Tran decades ago during a dance lesson and it wasn't long until they tied the knot.

Aside from teaching dance nearly five times a week, Tran was also a truck driver and registered a business, Tran’s Trucking Inc., from 2002 to 2004.

It's unclear when Tran stopped teaching lessons at the studio, but he relocated to Hemet in 2013 after about 20 years in Los Angeles.

Tran's friend lost contact with the gunman around the time he moved and was shocked to hear about the massacre.

The friend also recalled Tran being quick to anger and didn't trust people.

Tran's ex-wife, whose identity wasn't revealed, said she was only married to the gunman for a short time before he filed for divorce in 2005.

She recalled the first time she met Tran and he offered her free dance lessons.

Tran's love appeared to fade quickly as she claimed her former instructor lost interest in her and became easily angered when she messed up on choreography.

Their marriage license showed that Tran is an immigrant from China.

The Star Ballroom Dance Studio shooting was Tran's first stop before he went 30 minutes later to the Lai Lai Ballroom in nearby Alhambra where brave patrons fought him off and took the gun.

Tran then fled the scene and was at large until Sunday when police found him in the van he used to flee the massacre.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna identified Tran as the suspect on Sunday and confirmed his motive is unknown.

'He intended to kill more people,' Luna said in a news conference on Sunday night. 'They saved lives,' he said of the patrons. 'This could've been much worse.'

The exact ages of the victims were not released, but Luna they all appeared to be over 50. Seven of the wounded people remained in the hospital, he said.

The oldest mass shooter, I don't know why, but it's even more shocking that he was 72. I'd like to know a motive but many times there never is a clear one left behind by the killer.

Just want to add that white vans, especially like mine, with dark tinted windows are not always there to facilitate a crime. If I creep up real slow and my buddy flings the doors open and pulls you inside, we may just be interested in a friendly chat. Quit being so sensitive.

- He had met his ex-wife there. He introduced himself and offered her free lessons. They got married soon after. They had been married for two decades. After several years of marriage he had begun to lose interest in her. He ended up filing for divorce in 2005.

- His ex-wife said he wasn't violent, but had a quick temper. She said if she missed a step in dance he would get upset and say she's making him look bad.

- Tran often complained to a friend that the instructors at the dance hall didn't like him and said evil things about him. His friend said to police that he was hostile to a lot of people there, and he didn't trust most people.

- In 2013 he sold home he had in San Gabriel, CA that he resided in for two decades. In around 2020 to 2021 he bought a mobile home in a senior citizens community in Hemet, CA.

- Shortly after the shooting, it's suspected that he went to a second dance studio in Alhambra, CA. Where he would be disarmed by civilians and left the scene in his van .He tried to get treatment at a local hospital in that area, from being in a fight. After a while, he left.

- The weapon he used had been recovered from that second dance studio in Alhambra, CA. The weapon is a Cobray M11 9mm Semi Automatic. They also found a second weapon in his van, an unspecified handgun. In which he used to kill himself with.
