Tay Bridge Disaster Near Dundee, Scotland, December 28, 1879
The high girders of the first Tay Rail Bridge collapsed during a storm near Dundee, Scotland, on the evening of December 28, 1879, taking a passing train with them. There were no survivors. The 1880 Court of Inquiry accepted a death toll of 75 and blamed bridge designer Sir Thomas Bouch, but later research based on death certificates identified 59 victims, including 55 passengers and four crew members. Only 46 bodies were recovered. The locomotive, North British Railway No. 224, was later raised from the wreckage. Contemporary photographs and engravings show the bridge before and after the collapse, fallen girders and damaged piers, divers and salvage crews at work, and the gap left by the destroyed section. Other period material includes newspaper illustrations, a broadsheet poem and accounts published in the immediate aftermath. Also covered here: Photographic Time Line |

eaton, thanks for the suggestion but that's a little time consuming :p yes, i was thinking it would be awesome as a DR team project for everyone to go into their local papers and find the covers of old editions when disasters happened. |
