He'd just come over a crest when he threw the anchors out, the car hadn't had a chance to settle back down onto it's suspension after being unloaded over the crest so the left front wheel braked normally but the right front wheel under-rotated due to being less weighted, at that point the car was just going straight to the wall as the under-rotated right front tyre had, effectively, no grip on the road. Hitting the brakes in that situation is an automatic and understandable response, but in that situation his best option was to release the throttle and steer slightly towards the grass with engine braking slowing him. But, that's a tough thing to learn as it means overriding natural human survival instinct which is to hit the brakes when you see something coming straight towards you...
