Re: Car Pulls in Front of Motorcycle
at the speeds in the video it is yeah... and it requires a very high level of focus as you need to be able to predict every possible movement that the cars may make....doors opening in your path, cars switching lanes to move 5 feet ahead in a traffic jam, women closing the gap because they're concentrating on their make up instead of keeping the car straight, taxi driver who think that eveyone else should be behind them so will close the gap deliberately and the n sit with a smug smile as they block your path....it can be hairy but play it right and be smart and slow and it's brilliant.... can knock a 20 minute journey down to 5 minutes in peak times

Re: Car Pulls in Front of Motorcycle
Basic speed law says that even if you're driving the speed limit you can still be driving too fast for traffic conditions. And since bikes don't stop on a dime, this dumbass paid the price. |

Re: Car Pulls in Front of Motorcycle
Interesting debate. For what it's worth, lane-splitting is legal in California and illegal everywhere else in the US. Based on the amount of head-splitting we see from motorcycle crashes around the world, I don't think lane-splitting is a good idea. In this particular video, it's hard to tell if the driver signaled but the bikes were moving so fast I doubt he would have seen them coming. Whether it should be legal or not... Eh, probably not. I think it's probably necessary in ridiculously-populated places like Bangkok, otherwise no one would ever get anywhere. But I think the white lines were drawn for a reason, otherwise accidents like the one in this video will happen constantly. (Oh wait, they already do.) Understanding lane-splitting, though, I think gives us some insight into some of the gory crashes we see on this site!! |

Re: Car Pulls in Front of Motorcycle
i think the guy in the video was probably very inexperienced...possibly even drunk.. experienced riders know safe speeds to filter...riding a bike is never free from danger but riding smart minimizes the chance of dying or killing someone else.

Re: Car Pulls in Front of Motorcycle
That's just my point though...lane splitting in itself is not smart. Considering the fact that hitting anything even doing 20mph on a bike is exponentially more deadly than hitting something in a car or truck, if you're lane splitting you're pretty much asking to punch your own ticket...all to "knock a 20 minute journey down to 5 minutes in peak times". I bet that guy wishes he had waited the extra 15 minutes. |
