id say ,,,,, he was trying t dislodge some chunk metal they were trying to melt down that was caught up, as he pried it, it then moved and caught his pole or shovel , which kicked him in his side and made him fall into the caldron , not pleasant but i doubt he suffered long , it was like a atomic explosion , caldrons can be up to 1500 degrees
