I'm not so sure about that. If he was her boyfriend, she would have probably greeted him or gave some sort of recognition as he stepped up to the couple in front of the store first. There appears to be no sort of acknowledgement from the victim when the killer was talking to the couple.

He then suddenly appears to the woman's right and she just flinches and goes down from the bullet.

So, from my point of view, they appeared to be strangers to each other.

Hard to know, I've had a girl I sent flowers to completely blank me out for weeks even though I had to work with her So maybe she was just blanking him out/ignoring him and then he wanted to see if she could see and feel the gun and bullet?
