This is some leftist that advocated for lesser punishment for criminals in his city of New York. He also helped open 'safe injection sites' which are basically places where people who do drugs can go in and inject themselves with free drugs provided there. Its ironic how everything he fought for in his life keeping criminals out of jail and allowing them to partake in drugs in public ultimately cost him his life.

Not only that, you also need to know how to conduct yourself. He saw the attacker doing some weird shit up ahead, looks like he told his gf to hang back and then he stood watching the guy as if to give him a jolly good talking to. He saw the shithead coming towards him but didn't prepare in any way for a fight, he just kept standing square. Then he tried a little gay push to get the attacker away ..for fucks sake At that point he needed to hit him hard if he was going to touch him at all.

He could have even got away when he saw the confrontation coming but he was acting like he was in A fucking Officer And A Gentleman. Not very streetwise really. He let his pride get in the way of logical thinking.
