Watch the second video, he wasn't directly underneath them and it looks like the rope/cable was secured to the bridge. Pretty much nothing they could have done short of climbing out there themselves.

Thats probably it. He wants to jump off a bridge like all his friends does but he is scared of water so he jumped off that bridge instead.
