Someone is considered clinically dead when normal body reflexes no longer occur when various outside stimuli is applied. The doctor or qualified person will perform a series of tests to determine the body's state (checking if the eyes respond to light, if there is any response to verbal commands, to pain, etc.) Clinical death starts when the person stops breathing independently, and when the body ceases to circulate blood.

If you're not attached to any kind of 'life support' machine, once you stop breathing, and your heart stops beating, your brain will run on fumes and continue to be active for another 20-40 seconds before it permanently shuts down.




You can think of agonal respiration like the action of taking your last breaths. It's pretty common in situations when the heart suddenly stops beating, like a heart attack.

This reflex can occur moments before a heart attack (which is actually a good sign - the heart attack wont be as severe), but can also happen at death, and can last anywhere from a few seconds to a couple hours after the heart stops beating depending on the situation.

My nephew was in a car accident 2 weeks ago. He had to be put on life support. I went to the hospital with my family and the doctors said even though his brain stem wasn`t damaged, he had severe damage to the frontal lobes and would never recover. We decided to take him off life support. When the tube was removed, he breathed on his own for about 10 minutes, then those reflex breaths happened. There were only about 4 reflex breaths, then his lips turned blue and the breathing stopped. However, when he was on life support, I told him in his ear that it`s ok to let go, that his parents are waiting for him. I was shocked when he opened his eyes after the tube was removed, but there was nothing there. Just a blank stare into space. The doctor did not declare him dead until the reflex breaths stopped. It`s been a bad year for my family already, then this happened.
