They didn't 'fight' gravity to fall, gravity caused them to fall! Have you never tried to stand something up against a wall? You must lean it onto the wall, it can't be flush or it will fall unless it's perfectly balanced, which is almost impossible with a tall, thin and flexible medium like these boards. And even if it were balanced, pushing on it would cause it to become unbalanced and fall. Besides, you can clearly see that the board immediately against the wall is slightly curved, which would act like a spring when pushed, as shown in this case.
