It's far more likely that the water level rose when they were already in the stream. There are several videos of this happening where are trickling stream that is only ankle deep turns in to a raging river in less that 2 minutes.

I have seen a dry river bed that hasn't seen water in years turn into a raging torrent overflowing a concrete 'bridge' in a matter of 10 minutes or so. Frightening. Sobering. |

It sounds like it is normally a shallow spot. To those commentators here saying they are idiots for swimming in raging water. The description indicates that the dam was opened upstream resulting in raging waters.
