You cannot legally shoot someone in the leg, same way you cannot Fire a "warning shot". If you shoot the suspect in the leg you will be sued and the officer would lose his job. Its called deadly force for a reason and is justified if a suspect is acting within those means. So no, you cannot shoot a suspect in the leg. There is a video on here of an officer (not in the US) who shot a suspect in the leg, and the suspect died due to the fact that his artery was hit. There is no safe way to shoot someone lol.

I can't see any reason to shoot the guy even if he did have a knife, the cop was not in danger when he shot the guy. He wasn't in striking distance, he wasn't a threat at that point. If the guy had lunged for him then drill the fucker, seems to me the cop panicked.
