At first, I thought the problem started during what appeared to be an awkward romantic embrace. Watching again, however, it looks like she's in trouble the moment she stops walking. Even though the water was still several inches below her knees, she was losing her footing and asking for help.

Still, I don't think they truly appreciated the full extent of the danger at that time. Had they immediately tried to get to the beach, she may have had a chance. They may have thought things would pass (or at least improve). Unfortunately, "slow & steady" didn't win this race.

While I come here for the gore, this site at times puts things in perspective by reminding me just how fragile life can be. In an instant, what was a carefree romantic walk on the beach became an unimaginable tragedy--with one young life lost and another likely to be tormented by a lifetime of survivor guilt.

I'm not gonna bash him. I believe that most people who see this video wouldn't fully appreciate the true danger.

I agree - they had no idea the danger that they were putting themselves in. I was pulled out by a rip current when I was in my mid 20s; before I knew it, I was way the fuck out from shore. Friends couldn't see me. Fortunately I was in my bodybuilding phase at that time, and eventually swam back to shore. Was exhausted & puking up sea water. Didn't know back then that I just could've swam along the shoreline until I escaped the pull. Lesson learned - I know what a rip current looks like now & I don't fuck around when on vacation at beach. The waves in this vid - I'd never set a toe in the water.
