Runner Dies During Brooklyn Half Marathon
Hey all, long time lurker, first time poster! The Brooklyn Half Marathon was run yesterday, and one competitor collapsed and died at the finish line. I don't have the means at the moment to post a clip, but if you jump 55 minutes,8 seconds in the livestream, you can see the runner, in a neon yellow singlet dive forward and collapse at the finish line. All resuscitation efforts failed. The raceday photos also captured the moment of his collapse: |

Re: Runner Dies During Brooklyn Half Marathon
Hey, at least he finished. Imagine if he collapsed 5 seconds earlier.

Re: Runner Dies During Brooklyn Half Marathon
Thinking the same. Over a minute before they rolled him on his back. Can't figure this out. I've done many races and at the major events they have medical professionals and trained first responders at intervals on the course and at the finish line. I couldn't get a good enough look via this video to see what they were doing when they finally rolled him over but with what I could see this was not a "first response" working at it's finest.

Re: Runner Dies During Brooklyn Half Marathon
~ Runners usually collapse from dehydration &/or headaches caused by lack of electrolytes. The area was having unseasonably warm temperatures, despite the fog. ~ Nearly 20,000 runners participated in the Brooklyn Half-Marathon 13.1 mile race. It began at the Brooklyn Museum, went around Prospect Park and along Ocean Parkway, finishing in Coney Island on the boardwalk. ~ Just after 9:30 a.m. Saturday, about two and a half hours after the 13.1 mile race started, 32-year-old D. R., Therapist, collapsed at the finish line. According to the news report he died from a heart attack. ~ (Watch video): His time was 1:41:51, but he made it, 13.1 miles. ~ I admire his determination, but next time he needs to take more electrolytes so he won't pass out. And, NO, Gatorade is not enough. ~ Electrolytes need to be maintained in an even balance for your body to function properly. Otherwise, vital body systems can be affected. Severe electrolyte imbalances can cause serious problems such as coma, seizures, and cardiac arrest. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...thon-rcna30003 |
