Last article I read the police were looking into the backgrounds of the victims as they feel the motive might be something other than sole robbery (the amount stolen was comparatively low for a gold shop theft).

I would agree with this assessment. I've read multiple stories and seen videos of gold shop robberies committed in Thailand through the years, and it is not common for robbers to start shooting people left and right before taking the gold. If anything the first thing these robbers do is to intimidate the people in the shop and not start shooting at people.

Also, it seems like most gold robberies in Thailand are committed in stand alone gold stores, not in mall settings like Robinson's.

I would also guess that the motive was not robbery, it might have been a targeted shooting for some reason.
