There's a possible explanation for this which points away from a hoax - but not definitively obviously. There has been a thread running for years on findadeath where several people are adamant they saw the Chubbuck suicide on a VHS in the 90s. Of course it's possible they are mistaken, but this belief that a recording was in public circulation somewhere is part of what's fuelled the fascination with this clip. There were apparently legal actions used to keep it out of the public domain. For a contemporary example, look at the lengths Justin Bieber's legal team went to to keep his racist video out of circulation. Like injunctions, they only delay the inevitable exposure, but they are successful to a degree. It may well be that someone has finally given up the ghost on trying to prevent the Chubbuck footage being released - but I would still like to know more about the source of this footage.

Like I said previously, my instinct tells me it's real. It just looks authentic; that sudden violent reaction to the shot is key for me. It just has an authentic feel; which I know is not scientific or definitive but nonetheless has value. What would be interesting to know is if the footage Mollie Nelson passed onto a legal firm is of better quality. The release of this footage is the only objective verification we have to go on; as well as holding hope of being better in quality.

From what I can tell (and there are people better placed to discuss the technicalities) it's not just use that will degrade the kind of tape the footage is captured on; but natural degradation due to chemical reaction and storage conditions. I'm not saying I know for sure, but people seem to be looking for single absolutes as proof of fabrication where there isn't one. My instinct say it's real; the hoax is too elaborate.

True or not, it's fascinating that after all these years the topic still holds our interest so thoroughly. I believe it certainly COULD be true due to the dullness of it. This was not some HD filmed on-air suicide with multiple camera angles. This was a simple local news show from over 40 years ago. The simplicity of the video is what is striking to me.

I often think what would have happened if there was a surveillance video of John Lennon's murder. What would we have seen? Quite simply it would have just been some chubby guy firing at a skinny guy who fell forward. That's it. Nothing dramatic at all.

If this is indeed the Holy Grail we've wondered about for so long, it makes sense it would show up now that there are two separate films about Christine Chubbuck being made recently.
