The distance was like 10 meters. There was plenty of time to shoot the legs or use some other form of force. And yes, it's quite possible to stop people by shooting them in the legs. It's the standard procedure here in Finland.

Not that I really truly care, because when you charge into any place flailing a knife like a lunatic, you're looking to get shot by police BUT if we're being all judgy, yeah the cops totally killed this dude unjustifiably considering the situation. There was nobody within more than 10 feet of him and he didn't seem to be making any sudden moves, so legally, I can see where the cops are going to run into trouble. Other than that, fuck the guy.
