Yes that video is awesome, big time awesome

I have most of that footage all broken up and of bad to good quality that I was going to post as soon as I found it all , but this vid has most of everything! It would be perfect on the first page

With your permission can I toss this vid on the first post and give you credit for the upload?

Its hard to even dream about the horror of one minute having a great day at the track, drinking beer, eating hot dogs (or whatever was popular in France in 1955 for sporting events) hearing the powerful engines and seeing the best drivers in the world compete, and the next minute you have the hood, axle, engine and other smaller parts flying straight at you

No matter how many times I have watched or even went over this footage frame by frame I always cringe

Worst sporting event tragedy of all time

Here is Levegh
Have you never heard of the Hillborough 96? 96 Liverpool fans died at an FA cup match. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsborough_disaster

Great post.

If anyone is looking for more info, there's a 1hr documentary about this crash called "Deadliest Crash: The Le Mans 1955 Disaster", which is well worth tracking down if you can find it. Interviews with drivers and spectators. BBC (UK) aired it on 10th May 2010 according the file I have.

edit:
someone has uploaded it to youtube...

I have heard of Hillsborough

Whats your point?

Did you think I meant "Most number of lives lost at a sporting event" when I said that Le Mans was the "Worst sporting event tragedy of all time"

Impatient unruly fans trying to cram into a stadium triggered by years of ridiculously stupid acts of Hooliganism is not comparable to what happened at Le Mans

Think how many lives would have been saved with the safety barriers of today.

If the safety barriers and catch fences of today were in place in Le Mans in 1955 the only deaths would have been Levegh and the track worker

Amazing to think how far we have come with driver and spectator safety

I'm an LFC fan, so please don't talk about the 96 like that. I think it's on par, as many of the supporters were kids, and it was actually the stadium directors faults, as they kept moving people into the stands where they were meant to be.
