Yes, and no. You don't NEED to crack ribs, in order to do effective CPR. You're right, in that the compressions shown are useless (the latest guidelines teach "hard and fast", so at least 100/min and at least 2 inches). However, CPR isn't used to restart the heart. Chest compressions are merely meant to try and keep oxygenated blood circulating, to the brain. Even compressions without any rescue breaths, are better than nothing at all. The idea is to sustain the circulation long enough, until a defibrillator is available, or ALS personnel is on scene (if the heart isn't in a shockable rhythm).
