Who wants a little history lesson on the origin of the word "Bumbaclot"? Alright, alright, Uncle! But first...  So listen up. When the British and/or Dutch or French and whoever else, kidnapped all the black people to bring to the Caribbean to make sugar and barrels. The Africans new nothing of the various mystery fabrics that white people wiped their butts with. They just didn't really know what they were all about. Despite this, when it came time to learn of them, they chose not to do so, regarding their usefulness, and rather to associate the curious items with the English words "Bum" and "Cloth", and then laughed at it. I myself, would have made this very same decision. They quickly made the word(s) into a humorous term of derision. Eventually, as the Islands' multiple languages melted and meshed and evolved into today's Patois language, we can finally hear the result of what hundreds of years of excellence, and weed smoke can do to a pair of, otherwise only mildly excellent, words. It's like a slightly racist game of Telephone. |
