I have been most places in the world on business and pleasure, including Mexico and Brazil, and the only Spanish I have ever used is ordering at McDonalds or Wendys in the USA, "con queso solamente". I never paid attention in high school spanish and I never regretted it. Spanish is more useless than French, if a Mexican you are trying to talk with doesn't speak English, they are best avoided. If you speak French to a Frenchman in France, they loose any respect they had for you...
