Being racist isn't a requirement for being concerned about the influx of people entering this country illegally. But I completely agree that many people put everyone from an entire group into the same box, by default.

Some outside the US put all Americans all in the same box. Some people put all Mexicans in the same box. Black people, Chinese, gay, trans, white people... etc. etc. and so on and so on. The fact is that people are not the same. Other than basic human survival needs such as air, food, and shelter... being an American is the only thing I have in common with every other American.

It's the easiest form of cope and rationalization of one's feelings towards negative things that are being done by a smaller percentage of a particular group. Seeing people as individuals despite their backgrounds, origins, sexual orientation, gender and whatever else takes tolerance, acceptance, work and patience. Not everyone is built for it so they do what's easiest. Throw everyone together.
