No. Pinching them shut is not necessary. Your body has the ability to recover from traumatic injury buying you time to take further measures. The relaxed position of arteries is closed. That is to say, if there is a lack of blood pressure to an artery it will collapse. This is both a function of the musculature around the artery, as well as the arterial cells themselves. When an artery is severed - as in this video - the musculature contracts pulling the opened end of the artery inside itself. Secondarily, the artery also collapses, thus almost sealing the opening. The seepage from the remaining unsealed portions can easily be blocked by coagulation of blood. Keep in mind that for all of this to occur, the major musculature has to remain intact. Many times the open end of the artery is too far outside of the musculature to be retracted, and constricted adequately enough to stop blood flow. Other arteries just don't have a lot of supporting musculature (i.e. the neck, the chest cavity, and the upper abdominal cavity). Hope this helps you understand how these victims survive their own stupidity. |
