That he was so frightened by the bus that he quickly allowed his head to retreat into his chest cavity like a turtle. Perhaps even, he was frightened by something else entirely, earlier--minutes or maybe hours before. This is literally the only explanation for why he would enter the intersection so empty helmetedly.
