How did the shooter know he didn't have a knife or a gun? If someone is breaking into a house after being told they would be shot, he had bad intentions.

From the video I get the impression that this man was not sober.
Most def was not sober. Check out the twitchy eyes / slower judgement and opening the first door in a zombie-like haze. After breaking down door looks like the defender shot him in the shoulder which spun him around while capping 2 more shots in a blink of an eye.
